about

Hannah Lee’s debut EP Ciclos is a sonic journey to purge the subconscious and find inner peace. The artist opens up this emotional process to the public in order to generate a similar experience in the listener.

The four-track EP starts off with ‘Y Así Como Se Dijo, Así Se Hizo’ (title inspired by the Kʼicheʼ text Popul Vuh), a journey from the literal to the abstract. The opening track begins with an altered sample of church bells at mid-day, then slowly develops into an overwhelmingly expansive and intricate sonic cloud that, once finished, leaves the listener feeling both awake and attentive.

‘Valley Queer’, defines identity in a much more literal sense, overlaying various recordings of the artist’s surroundings in Ecuador with a voice message from a friend back home to create an oddly comfortable sonic landscape.

‘Procesa Tus Traumas’ takes the listener through the therapeutic process of confronting one’s traumas by reflecting the jolts of emotion and confusion we all experience when suddenly forced to confront these experiences. As the darkest and most hectic track of the EP, the listener is left feeling exhausted yet purged of the negative.

Previously released as a single, ‘Self-Care Is (a Part of) Resistance’ closes off the EP as a summary of the overall message and a more formal practice of the EP’s desired result; a meditative exploration that looks to heal the body and mind in this chaotic time. The organic undulation of the melody expresses a natural simplicity, giving the audience a sense of inner peace necessary to push through personal and global difficulties.

The EP is complemented visually by two music videos. The video for ‘Self-Care Is (a Part of) Resistance’ uses dance and daily activities as a visual metaphor to reflect on self care exploration as an integral part of resistance, transcendence, and liberation. The second video to be released compliments ‘Y Así Como Se Dijo, Así Se Hizo’ with a compilation of short videos filmed throughout the last four years in the US, Argentina, Colombia, and Ecuador that express an attention to detail reflective of the abstract energy of the track.
